"In
the summer of 2030 a terrible pandemic is sweeping the world – yet again – and
scientists soon discover that the ‘new’ virus was probably created by the
multiple vaccines previously administered. People are dying in their droves and
by Christmas of that year, the planet faces the greatest medical catastrophe of
all time. The new virus has mutated inside its human hosts because of the
multiple injections and killing millions. No one saw that development until too
late. Team 74 is dispatched because the new virus was originally safe and the
Human time line is under serious threat of change."

“It doesn’t make any bloody sense Ma’am; who the hell
would abduct and murder an old school janitor who was almost a bloody recluse?
He had no money; Christ, he cleaned toilets for a living!” Detective Sergeant
Stuart Adam’s stared about the wrecked room and folded his arms. Detective
Inspector Adele Crawly just shook her head; for the moment she didn’t know.
They [the police] had received the report from the School’s head Teacher and it
was simple at first; the school’s totally reliable old caretaker had simply
vanished after working at the school for almost twenty years. Reliable as a
Swiss watch was how the head teacher described the old man.
Then two constables visiting the address to check on
the report had found all this.
DI Crawly sighed and lifted the small dictionary from
the desk and stared at the two small blood splatters that had been marked upon
it by the Forensics’ team. Their report was brutally simple and concise;
someone had been assaulted and probably murdered in the small room. There were
blood splatters and little pieces of human skin and hair mingled with the
debris. Whoever the killer or killers were they had done a thorough job
ransacking and destroying the small room.
“Apparently, he used to write his stories in here on an
old laptop. That’s missing as well. His friend; Iris, one of the school
cleaners used to have tea with the old man most afternoons and he would tell
her about his latest story. I was a little amazed to find that he had five
books for sale on Amazon. Not bad for a school caretaker who earns less than a
council road sweeper.” Di Crawly slowly placed the dictionary back on the desk
and looked about the room. It had been thoroughly wrecked; she knew that the
damage wasn’t just random mindless destruction. Someone was looking for
something; but what the hell did an old caretaker have that was worth killing
for?
“Maybe they thought he kept some cash from his royalty
payments on site? His books have been selling well. Iris says that he confided
to her that he had sold almost sixty thousand copies of his latest book; now
that must be serious money.” The sergeant spoke softly and continued to jot
down little notes in his book. DI Crawly nodded her agreement with the
sergeants thinking; that could be serious money and what the hell was the old
man spending it on? He didn’t run a car, hardly ever left the small bungalow
and had modest amounts of shopping delivered by the local ASDA. His bank
statements should make interesting reading; his mobile phone certainly didn’t.
The old man last received a phone call nine days ago and that was from someone
selling Funeral Insurance.
The Di walked to the big window and looked out onto the
school playing field. She noticed the splashes of blood streaked on the glass,
with little red patches splattered on the bright blue curtains. The window was
closed and locked. She tapped the window still and saw the dust upon her finger
tips. “The two uniform officers that broke in after the urgent missing persons
report was made; what was it they said about the smell?” She asked her sergeant
who flicked through his notebook and grunted; “Said there was a strange smell
about the place; like someone was burning incense. They thought it smelt like
sulphur and bloody perfume mixed together.”
“Do we know what sort of stories he wrote?” She asked
the sergeant who was knelling on the carpet, lifting something with his pencil.
He looked up; “Crazy stuff really, about time travel, ghosts, bloody demons and
stuff like that. Apparently there must be an audience for it.” The DI nodded
and sighed; “What have you got there?” The sergeant stood and held his pencil
out; “I think it a piece of an ear. How the hell did forensics miss that?” The
DI actually shuddered and shouted for one of the Forensic team to come back in.
She walked to the door and headed back outside, breathing a little deep in the
warm sunshine.
DC Clare Ludlow jumped from her car and went straight
up to her DI. “I’ve just interviewed the old caretaker’s cleaner friend; Iris
Chappell and it’s weird to say the least. She say’s the old man was a bloody
prophet! Apparently, he seemed to know about events before they happened. Had
quite a following on the Internet; you know the tin foil hat brigade. His
latest story was about some virus the real rulers of the world release and kill
millions. You know, the usual conspiracy crap about the world being run by the
ultra rich and elected governments don’t matter.” The young DC smiled and
rummaged in her plain handbag; her phone was ringing.
The DI stared back at the bungalow and muttered; “Well,
someone took it seriously.” The DC had a real strange look on her face. “It’s
the station Ma’am. They say they tried to call you a couple of time but your
phone is off.” The DI sighed; she had turned the damn thing off to concentrate
on the possible murder scene. The DC leaned forward and dropped her voice;
“Apparently a couple of officers from MI6 have arrived at the station and want
to speak with you.” The Di just stared at her; “What, over the suspected murder
of a bloody school caretaker, you’re joking?” The DC shook her head and pushed
her phone back into her bag; “No, it’s no joke Ma’am. They’re sending their own
team up here and they want everything we’ve discovered and apparently they mean
everything!”
The DI walked to her car and slipped into the passenger
seat and watched as DS Adam’s walked quickly over and jumped into the driver’s
seat; he gripped the wheel and looked quite pale. “What is it Stuart?” She
asked softly. He turned and didn’t smile, from his pocket he pulled a small
Dictaphone and pushed the rewind button. The tape made a strange noise and
suddenly stopped. DS Adam’s pushed the ‘play’ button and the DI leaned over him
and listened.
The tape played for just over three minutes then
stopped abruptly. The pair sat in silence until the DI whispered; “Sweet bloody
Jesus! What have we just heard?” The
sergeant wiped the sweat from his face with his shirt sleeve. “Some poor
bastard being murdered – no, torn apart – by some kind of animal with a human
voice.” They both stared at each other then noticed the three black SUV vans
turning into the schools drive way. “They’re here.” The DI said quietly."
