"TOMB ES-42."

Mission summary:

"Steve Watson is the Senior Archaeologist working the Necropolis [burial ground] at El Sharma, some sixty miles West of Luxor. This ancient place is almost forgotten; except by the people who work there. Egypt at this time is under British control and in the November of this year, a certain Howard Carter would amaze and shock the world with the discovery of Pharaoh Tutankhamen's stunning tomb. But there was a far more important tomb discovered that year and its very existence would be completely denied; that was Tomb ES-42 and its discovery should have changed the world. Jericho Tibbs is dispatched to ensure it doesn't."

"TOMB ES-42."

1. TEMPLE OF KARNAK, DAY 3, PERET (GROWING SEASON) 1452BC.

The young man with a clean shaven head knelt on the hard stone floor, both arms outstretched, staring up at the colossal Ram headed statue towering before him. His lips were moving, but Anebos was not speaking to anyone, including the ‘father of the Gods: Amen-Ra’, no, the young priest was talking to the self proclaimed deity which had invaded his thoughts and dreams for the last few months. In the semi-darkness of the great holy temple he could feel no serenity or calm and certainly not the presence of the great Egyptian god he knelt before. Suddenly he fell forward and prostrated himself at the feet of the stone God and called out in a trembling voice; “Why do you torment me? Why have you come to me with such evil heresy, foul blasphemy and dark corruption of my heart! “Anebos ran both hands over his bald head and shook violently, shouting “NO! NO! I don’t believe you! As there is mortal family in Kemet, so there is divine family! How can just you have made everything, know what each of us think and yet you have no form!”

He was now back on his knees and sobbing. The deity was now whispering some terrible things to the pious Egyptian about his precious ‘Gods’. Anebos wiped his face and staggered to his feet, shouting again; “NO! You lie! You are just in my head……” That’s when he found himself standing in strong sunlight, in the middle of the permanently dark inner sanctum of Egypt’s greatest God. He was bathed in rich bright light so strong that he shielded his eyes and called out for mercy. Then the light was gone and young Anebos staggered up and stumbling, headed for the big dark wooden door. He stopped by it and took several deep breaths, then tugged furiously until a small gap appeared which he could squeeze through. He raced down the steps and suddenly stopped in the middle of the plaza. Anebos looked about; he was alone between the two huge rows of statues depicting the senior Gods and Goddesses of Kemet. He turned 360 degrees; twice.

That’s when the terrible realization came upon the young man who had dedicated his life to these ‘Gods’. That they were empty stone statues created by the hand of man and nothing more: only bought to life by men telling stories about them. They were nothing without the hands and words of man to bring such entities to life. No, these God’s didn’t create man, man created them. That realization was so strong that Anebos collapsed on the path and cried out for mercy: his heart was in utter turmoil. All that he had learnt over the last ten years at the temple school for priests had been lies: fabrications of men to control other men. The deity in his head told him to sleep and when he awoke, he would instruct Anebos how he would serve him.

It was the old priest Osiris- An and his young apprentice that found Anebos sprawled on the pathway between the rows of silent stone gods. Together they managed to arouse him and Anebos sat up and smiled at the pair, thanking them for their kindness. The old priest suggested he should rest but Anebos patted his shoulder and smiled again; “No my old friend, I have my father’s work to go about.” That puzzled Osiris-An; he had known Anebos since he had arrived at the temple as a boy and knew that he had no known father. Anebos’s mother always said that she was touched by no man and that his birth had surprised her beyond belief. The woman decided that since he was a ‘gift’ from the gods; they could have him back as a gift from her. The Chief priest of the great temple had accepted him despite being somewhat skeptical about his mother’s story! Now he strode off towards the main gates of the temple and passed by the bored guards that manned it and into the busy streets. There were people everywhere and it contained many stall’s selling goods and various animals to purchase for sacrifices to the Gods.

An elderly woman standing over several wicker baskets with her young grandson called to him, saying she had the finest birds for sacrifice that could be bought outside the great city of Thebes. He stared past her and saw two men selling lambs and baby goats for blood sacrifices to please the gods. Anebos found himself saying quite loudly; “God doesn’t want blood but your love.” Several of the crowd gathered around him and two women – one nursing an infant at her big breasts – asked him which god wanted love and not blood. Her elderly mother gripped a thick stick and asked her daughter who was talking. She told her it was a priest from the big temple. The old woman didn’t smile, almost spitting out the words; “What! Does he want more gold? What does he desire? Be wary my daughter, I may have no sight but I can see charlatans clear enough!”

Anebos felt compelled to walk straight up to her and ask; “Old mother does your God love you?” Really surprised at such a question the old woman mumbled; “I don’t know sir, there are so many gods and I don’t think any really loves anyone…..” Anebos interrupted her and placed his hand upon her brow; “The one great God that made the world and all creatures that inhabit it asks for nothing but your love and in return will love you.” The old woman staggered back, her trembling hands covering her eyes. She started to sob which enlarged the crowd greatly.

Finally, she pulled her hands from her face and stared about, then fell to her knees screaming – almost hysterically – that she could see! Her daughter embraced her sobbing mother and started crying too. Several of the crowd started shouting about the young magician who had restored the sight of old blind Tye, the widow of Geb, the long dead cutter of stone. Many knew she had lost her sight some years ago and could see nothing but bitter darkness. Her family had nearly bankrupted themselves with sacrifices to the God Thoth, all to no avail: the darkness had remained until now.

Anebos walked slowly away with several beggars and some disabled former soldiers trailing behind, calling out for mercy. That was when he was joined by another young man – Darius, who worked in his father’s bakery – and the pair walked together in silence until Darius finally said; “So, where does your magic powers come from Priest? Which God favours you above all other men?” Anebos stopped and smiled at the man; “No God that you know my friend; he has no need of statues, temples, land or dead animals or birds! He has no priests since we are all his priests! All he wants is your love and for you to love him and your brothers and sisters; simple as that.”

The young man rubbed his face, thinking; “So, if he has no temple or priests where does he reside? I mean the father of the gods; Amen-Ra resides here at the great temple, so where does your one live?” Anebos chuckled; “Big empty stone statutes reside here and nothing more, attended by equally empty priests practicing empty and pointless rituals for themselves so that other men will bend their knee to them and their ideas. The one true god resides in every single one of us and you do not need a priest to find him!”

Anebos walked on, quite conscious that the crowd following was getter larger by the minute and equally noisier, so he was now becoming a little concerned how the city guard would deal with it.

Darius, now utterly intrigued, rushed to catch up and question this strange priest more. He had witnessed the miracle of old Tye with his own eyes and desperately wanted to know more, especially about this sole God who sounded utterly peculiar demanding nothing but love and commanding only that people should love each other! Darius knew that the Jewish slaves of Pharaoh worshipped a single God and he wondered if this was the same deity. “Maybe he wants to enlarge his flock.” Darius softly muttered to himself and was joined by his old school friend Aharon the silversmith’s apprentice, who asked what was happening and why the crowd was following the young priest.

Darius smiled and found himself saying that the priest’s god was truly powerful and real, unlike all the bloody stone statues that did fuck all despite how much you prayed or sacrificed to them! When he told Aharon that THE ‘God’ only wanted love from his people, Aharon was really intrigued: he hadn’t prayed to any God in some years: like his father, he thought it was all just stories to keep the peasants working hard for the nobles. He demanded Darius explain more and was told to follow the priest like he was going to do; the priest would have the answers: and so the pair did.

Several of the city guard stood and watched the crowd passing by chanting the name of the priest who strode in front of them like a commanding general. The officer unfolded his arms and gestured to the priest; “Come on men, let’s see why he’s disturbing the Pharaoh’s peace outside the great temple.” His men followed as he headed straight for Anebos and his crowd of noisy followers.
